About the Event

The Rebuild~a~Bike program is a cross-organizational collaborative project involving bike repair and advocacy organizations, government agencies, private donors, and DC residents to bring bicycles and cycling resources to some of our most vulnerable neighbors in the community. The project was initiated with a donation of 10 second-hand bikes to the McKenna Center Homeless Day Shelter in February of 2023. The Center and its affiliates worked to develop relationships and partner with several local organizations, and an event was born.

On April 22, 2023, we will have a bicycle repair clinic and an awareness event, hosted by the Bike House, where we will teach guests of the shelter how to rebuild their bicycles, and learn about basic bicycle safety and DC bike infrastructure and resources while building community across demographics. Several potential partners are being asked to contribute to this event, allowing the project to have low overhead costs, relying on resources presently available in the community, with the intention to restore value to what once may have been overlooked.
